The Township of Bonfield has a rich social and cultural heritage which has been heavily- influenced and shaped by the priorities and actions of its residents over time.
From a planning perspective, the modern-day Township contains a wide range of land uses, which are dispersed throughout the Hamlets of Bonfield and Rutherglen, the wider Rural Area, and a series of waterfront-based locations.
Most waterfront locations are generally described as the ‘Residential Limited Services’ (RLS) Zone in which public services, including Municipal Road maintenance, and access to properties by Emergency Vehicles, is reduced given a range of historic and geographic factors.
From a population-perspective, past and present residents have included a mix of indigenous communities, pioneers, and economic migrants; plus, locally born and raised families. Other more-recent populations have comprised new entrepreneurs, rural lifestyle, and recreation seekers, including a mix of anglophone, francophone, and other / newcomer populations.
