Boards & Committees

The Township of Bonfield values community involvement and transparency in local governance. Our various boards and committees play a crucial role in advising Council, making decisions on specific matters, and ensuring that diverse perspectives are considered in municipal affairs. These bodies are categorized into four main types: Advisory Committees, Boards, Quasi-Judicial Committees, and Ad-Hoc Committees.

Types of Committees

Advisory Committees provide recommendations and insights to Council on specific areas of interest or concern. They are composed of community members and stakeholders who bring valuable expertise and perspectives.

  • Corporate Services Committee: This committee provides input on administrative functions, financial policies, and corporate governance to support efficient municipal operations.
  • Emergency Management and Fire Department Committee:
This committee provides input on emergency preparedness, fire services, and public safety policies to help ensure the Township is ready to respond effectively to emergencies and protect the wellbeing of residents.
  • Planning Advisory Committee: This committee offers guidance on land use planning, zoning, and development matters, ensuring that growth aligns with the Township's Official Plan and community values.
  • Recreation & Fitness Committee: This committee focuses on enhancing recreational opportunities, and advises on the development and improvement of parks, programs, and community events.

Ad-Hoc Committees are temporary bodies established by Council to address specific issues or projects. They are dissolved once their mandate is complete.

Boards are established to oversee specific services or functions within the Township, often operating with a degree of autonomy.

  • Bonfield Public Library Board: Responsible for the management and operation of the Bonfield Public Library, this board ensures access to information, literacy programs, and community resources.

  • Bonfield Medical Centre Board: Oversees the governance and strategic direction of the Bonfield Medical Centre, ensuring the provision of quality healthcare services to the community. The board includes a community representative position to incorporate local perspectives in decision-making.

  • Lake Nosbonsing OPP Detachment Board: Oversees local policing priorities and community safety initiatives in partnership with the Ontario Provincial Police. Representing the municipalities of Bonfield, Chisholm, and East Ferris, the board provides guidance to the Detachment Commander and helps align police services with local needs. Bonfield's representation includes both a Council member and a community representative.

Quasi-Judicial Committees have the authority to make decisions on specific matters, often involving legal or regulatory considerations.

  • Committee of Adjustment: This committee reviews applications for minor variances and land severances, making decisions in accordance with the Planning Act and local zoning by-laws.
