Fire Prevention

The overall goal of the Bonfield Volunteer Fire Department is to reduce the number of deaths, severity of injuries and property damage caused by fire. 

We want to provide the citizens of the community the skills necessary to protect themselves, their family members and all others from the hazards of fire.

Fire Prevention and Education

Fire Inspections are conducted on a request and complaint basis. Scheduled inspections are also conducted at these types of occupancies:

  • Schools
  • Health Care Facilities
  • Vulnerable Occupancies
  • Hotels and Motels
  • Homes during emergency responses to ensure carbon monoxide and smoke alarms are properly installed and maintained · For more information visit Kidde Canada.

Bonfield Volunteer Fire Department aims to stop fires before they start and attempts to achieve this through Public Education and if necessary enforcing the Ontario Fire Code and the Township of Bonfield By-law for Open Air Burning.

Emergencies can happen without warning—whether it’s a power outage, wildfire, flood, or severe storm. Having a well-stocked emergency preparedness kit ensures you and your family have the essentials to stay safe, connected, and self-sufficient for at least 72 hours.

An emergency kit can make a critical difference in how quickly you recover and how well you cope during a crisis. It’s a small step that provides peace of mind when you need it most.

Only working smoke alarms can save your life! 

Every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. It's the law. 

Homeowners: 

  • It is the responsibility of homeowners to install and maintain smoke alarms on every storey of the home and outside every sleeping area. 

Landlords: 

  • It is the responsibility of the landlords to ensure their rental properties comply with the law. 

Tenants: 

  • If you are a tenant of a rental property and do not have the required number of smoke alarms, contact your landlord immediately. 
  • It is against the law for tenants to remove the batteries or tamper with the alarm in any way. It is every one’s responsibility to make sure you have a working smoke alarm.
  • A tenant should test their smoke alarms monthly.
  • If your smoke alarm fails, please contact your landlord right away and have it replaced, or the batteries changed. 

Failure to comply with the fire code smoke alarm requirements could result in a ticket for $360.00 or a fine of up to $50,000.00 for individuals, $100,000.00 for corporations or up to 1 year of imprisonment or both. 

Please remember: 

  • When installing smoke alarms, refer to the manufacturer's instructions for information about correct placement.
  • Test your smoke alarms every month using the test button.
  • Replace smoke alarm batteries at least once a year, and/or whenever the low-battery warning chirps.
  • Smoke alarms don't last forever. Replace smoke alarms with new ones if they are more than ten years old from the date of manufacturing. The replacement date can be found either on the back of the smoke detector or along the side of the smoke detector. Some smoke alarms come with a ten-year sealed battery.
