Dogs

The Animal Control By-law requires all dogs to be registered on or before the first day of March each and every year.

Ensuring your dog is licensed gives you peace of mind. A dog licence enables the By-law Enforcement Officer to contact you quickly and easily in the event that your dog wanders away from you or your property or is injured on the road.

You can register your dog in person at the Township Office or on the website by submitting the appropriate form and fee.

Dog & Cat Licence Application 2025

-       Dog owners are responsible to stoop and scoop after their pet. Dog waste is an environmental and a health hazard. Dog waste can transmit diseases to other people's pets and pollute our beaches and waterways.

Dogs must be on a leash when off of their owner's property.

An unleashed dog (dog at large) is a danger to motorists, pedestrians and themselves. If there is a dog running at large in the community, a by-law enforcement officer will attempt to capture the dog. If the owner is unknown, they will take the dog to the municipal pound.

An animal shall not be considered running at large if it is:

  • Registered Service Animal:
  • Police work Dog
  • Farm dog or farm cat

No owner of a dog shall cause or permit his or her dog to be a public nuisance by:

  • Persistently barking or howling;
  • Scattering garbage or interfering with waste collection services; or
  • Chasing persons, vehicles, animals, livestock, poultry or other animals kept on an agricultural property.

All dogs bark. A dog barking occasionally is not considered a problem; however, a dog which barks persistently is a nuisance to the community. Barking persistently or howling is defined as repeatedly barking or howling for twenty (20) minutes or longer.

Where any Officer has received and investigated three (3) complaints about the persistent barking of a dog, which complaints have resulted in a conviction of the owner of the dog under the Municipality’s By-laws or any successors thereto, the By-Law Enforcement Officer or Animal Control Officer shall be entitled to retrieve the dog from the owner and keep the dog in the appointed Animal Shelter for a period of ten (10) days or until the By-Law Enforcement Officer or Animal Control Officer is satisfied that the owner of the dog has taken proper and effective steps to control the barking of the dog, whichever is the lesser.
