What’s going on here?  Free firewood you say?  

The Public Works Crew is cutting down approximately 50 dead or declining ash trees in the Park.  
The trees started to show decline last year and this year all have shown further poor health with 
many now dead.   

During the budget process Council approved applying for grants to clear the park trees and replant 
new ones.  Staff applied, but no grants were approved. The trees remain a safety hazard in the park.  

As of September 28, 2026 areas within Kaibuskong Park are closed so Public Works and the Fire 
Department can clear the trees.  The area in the green circle below highlights the closed section. 
Please do not enter this area.  This project affects the island and bridge, but no play structure area 
or the pathway.  Users are still encouraged to use caution in the area.  The area is expected to re
open to the public after the tree planting day and staff deem it safe.    

The trees will be cut and blocked up for personal firewood.  Residents who are interested in getting 
firewood are asked to contact the municipal office, details below. Residents will be asked to sign 
a pickup form before receiving wood.  The wood cannot be “re-sold”.  Once the Township is ready 
for the wood to be picked up, those residents will be contacted.  

Please note that the firewood must be used locally.  The Canadian Food Inspection Agency 
restricts moving ash firewood out of emerald ash bore regulated areas as pests can travel in it. 
Nipissing District is within this regulated area. The firewood is meant to be used within the 
boundary of Bonfield.  

October 8, 2026 is the Community Tree Planting Day. Partnering with the North Bay Mattawa 
Conservation Authority and Trees 4 Nipissing over 45 trees will be re-planted in the Park.   We 
thank our partners for their efforts in beautifying the park and ensuring it is safe for everyone.
